ENTACC Rhinitis

Commonly known as a stuffy nose, rhinitis is the irritation of the internal areas of the nose caused by inflammation of the mucous membrane due to viruses, bacteria or irritants. This results in the generating of excessive amounts of mucous as well as nasal congestion and post-nasal drip. According to recent studies more than 50 million Americans are current sufferers. Rhinitis has also been associated with sleeping problems, ear conditions, and even learning problems. The increase in histamine is most often triggered by airborne allergens which cause an increase in fluid production. The two types of rhinitis are allergic and non-allergic. Allergic rhinitis occurs when an allergen such as pollen or dust is inhaled triggering the release of histamine. Treatments include avoidance, medications and/or immunotherapy. Non-allergic rhinitis is caused by triggers such as smells, fumes and smoke. Many of the same treatment options apply.
