Thyroid Disorders

The thyroid gland is located in the middle of the lower neck that makes hormones which regulatephysiological functions in the body such as metabolism. Millions of Americans are affected by diseases of the thyroid gland. The most common thyroid problems include hyperthyroidism (an overactive gland), hypothyroidism (an under active gland) and thyroid enlargement called a goiter.

Hypothyroidism treatment is thyroid hormone replacement medication. Hyperthyroidism treatment includes medication, radioactive iodine to destroy the gland and/or surgical removal of the thyroid gland. Goiters (lumps) often require testing to determine the size and location of the nodule. A fine-needle aspiration biopsy may be performed to differentiate a benign from a malignant mass. If CT, ultrasound or MRI testing shows worrisome characteristics or the fine-needle aspiration is suggestive of cancer, thyroid surgery may be required.
